Jr. League, Drummond House give back

By Catherine O’Hara • Review Staff

It’s the gift that keeps on giving.

Following a successful application to the Junior League of Hamilton-Burlington for a $2,500 grant, Drummond House presented five organizations with gift certificates to Rescued and Restored, a used-furniture outlet that helps fund the ongoing operations of Waterdown’s transitional home for women and children.

Martha House, Inasmuch House, Native Women’s Centre, Flamborough Women’s Resource Centre, a program of Interval House, and Halton’s Women’s Place each received $500 in gift certificates, redeemable at Rescued and Restored.

Drummond House supporter Gisela Zehmer submitted the grant application with the purpose of supporting women in area shelters. Rescued and Restored, she explained, sees many women from other organizations turn out to the Freelton Road facility in the hopes of acquiring necessary furnishings.

While Rescued and Restored gifted many gently-used items to women in need, this practice wasn’t sustainable. So Drummond House appealed to the Junior League of Hamilton- Burlington for funding to assist Hamilton and Halton women get back on their feet.

Drummond House’s proposal was on par with the Junior League’s goal of assisting young women affected by poverty, said registered charity’s president Dianne Brown.

“We are happy to give that money to Drummond House,” she said. “It’s such a good cause.”

The certificates were presented to representatives of the five shelters June 19 at Rescued and Restored, located in the Freelton Antique Market.
