It's no secret that today our communities face serious challenges that, directly or indirectly, are the result of widespread poverty. To address this critical issue, the JLHB has adopted a Focus of Poverty that grounds our volunteer efforts and resources in activities and partnerships across the community, including the collaboration fostered by the Hamilton Roundtable for Poverty Reduction.
The root causes of poverty are a lack of housing, warm clothing, education, food security, income security, accessible transportation, social inclusion and safe neighborhoods.
Poverty has a female face that often goes unreported.
Women account for about 60 percent of minimum-wage earners.
Women on their own are the poorest of the poor, especially women raising children, in one-parent families, who are almost five times more likely to be poor than those in two-parent families.
Young single mothers are particularly vulnerable, and represent and area of great need in our community.
Considering these factors, JLHB activities are focused on improving the educational success of young women affected by poverty. Specifically, we're committed to improving the life skills of these young women.

'Empower Hour' is an educational 10 week series of workshops and activities, launched as a pilot program by the JLHB in the spring of 2010, in partnership with the Good Shepherd Brennan House in Hamilton. Now adopted as a ongoing program of the JLHB, 'Empower Hour, opens the doors of success for young women living in poverty, by building self-esteem, confidence and the desire to succeed.
"The Empower Hour of the Junior League inspires women with the courage to break free from the chains of limitations and gives the young women the tools to see their true beauty and power. This is done through offering self help tools, self discovery, information, encouragement and inspiration as a guide on the journey of reclaiming their power as young women that may have been hindered by challenging life circumstances. The young women at Good Shepherd Brennan House are encouraged to see and bring forth the beauty and strength from within themselves and are inspired to be the best they can be." Loretta Hill-Finamore, Director Good Shepherd Youth Services.
